Purpose of the Position:

IEM is currently seeking a Director of Environmental, Sustainability, and Governance (ESG). This role will report into our VP of Environmental, Health & Safety. The preferred location for this role is to be based out of our Jacksonville office. However, we are open to remote candidates. The Director of ESG – Scope 1 & 2 Emissions is a critical leadership role responsible for driving enterprise-wide emissions reduction strategies across company-owned facilities, fleets, and energy consumption. Working within a private equity-backed industrial environment, this position is accountable for both tactical execution and strategic alignment with regulatory, financial, and customer ESG expectations — including Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (purchased electricity, steam, and heating/cooling).

This individual will design and operationalize decarbonization initiatives that are economically viable and aligned with capital planning, while ensuring compliance with evolving ESG disclosure standards (SEC, CSRD) and sustainability frameworks (SBTi, TCFD).

Key Responsibilities:

1. Scope 1 & 2 Emissions Strategy

  • Lead the creation of a comprehensive decarbonization roadmap focused on reducing:
    1. Scope 1: Emissions from fuel combustion (e.g., process heat, generators, mobile sources)
    2. Scope 2: Emissions from purchased electricity, steam, and heating/cooling
  • Identify and implement reduction levers such as:
    1. Electrification of equipment and fleets
    2. Energy efficiency retrofits (motors, HVAC, compressors)
    3. On-site renewable energy or procurement of green power (RECs, PPAs)
    4. Smart load management and heat recovery systems
    5. Align with Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) or equivalent pathways for target-setting and progress validation

2. Data, Systems, and Compliance

  • Develop site-level and enterprise-wide GHG inventories using the GHG Protocol

Corporate Standard (Scopes 1 and 2)

  • Select and manage ESG data systems or carbon accounting platforms (e.g., Persefoni, Sphera, Enablon)
  • Ensure readiness for:
    1. SEC Climate Disclosure
    2. CSRD (EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive)
    3. CDP Climate Questionnaire
    4. Support third-party assurance, investor-grade audits, and limited assurance reviews

3. Capital Planning & Cost Analysis

  • Partner with finance and operations to build ROI models for decarbonization projects
  • Integrate emissions reduction priorities into annual capex planning cycles
  • Evaluate grants, tax credits (e.g., IRA 45L, 48), and green financing instruments to support investments

4. Operational & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Work closely with plant managers, maintenance teams, and EHS to embed emissions reduction into facility-level KPIs
  • Develop energy management playbooks and training for frontline teams
  • Interface with procurement on low-carbon energy contracts, green tariffs, and emissions clauses in supplier agreements

5. Reporting & Stakeholder Engagemen t

  • Prepare board-level updates, investor materials, and ESG scorecard reporting
  • Respond to investor due diligence, private equity LP inquiries, and third-party ESG ratings (e.g., Sustainalytics, MSCI)
  • Lead or support development of ESG content in the company’s Annual or
  • Sustainability Reports

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Energy Systems, or related field (Master’s preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience in sustainability, environmental engineering, operations, or ESG leadership
  • Proven expertise in Scope 1 & 2 emissions accounting, carbon mitigation technologies, and facility-level decarbonization
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    1. GHG Protocol, SBTi, CDP, TCFD
    2. SEC climate rule or CSRD regulatory requirements
  • Industrial energy systems and building operations
  • Experience in manufacturing, heavy industry, or multi-site operations is highly preferred
  • Familiarity with ESG platforms (e.g., EcoVadis, Measurabl, Persefoni, Sphera)
  • Demonstrated career ambition with a track record of growth and increasing responsibility; highly promotable with the potential to take on broader leadership roles within a fast-paced, high-growth organization
  • Open to travel
