Summary: The Genetic Counselor assists the physician geneticists in patient care at Rush University Medical Center, Rush Medical College, and satellite clinics. General duties include counseling, record keeping, grant management, literature search, research, and teaching. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures. Other information: Required Job Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling accredited program.
  • Current State of Illinois Genetic Counselor licensure or eligible for temporary licensure in the State of Illinois
  • Board certification from ABGC or ABMG or eligible
Critical thinking abilities, the ability to function independently and demonstrate strong motivational, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Preferred Job Qualifications:
  • Two years genetic counseling experience preferred.
  • Research experience preferred.
Responsibilities:
  • Provides comprehensive pediatric and adult general genetic counseling services to patients in diverse pediatric and general genetics clinics with a variety of indications including but not limited to: connective tissue disorders, chromosomal disorders, single gene disorders, newborn screening, and family history of genetic disease.
  • Participates in assessment, diagnosis, evaluation, and follow up of patients seen in the genetics clinic and inpatient consultations.
  • Contributes to education of genetic counseling students and medical trainees on genetics issues.
  • Participates in patient follow-up, monitoring, and documentation for Lysosomal Storage Disorders clinic and registry.
  • Participates in self- or department-directed research projects and grants as needed.
  • Assists with the education of office staff on genetic and testing issues.
  • Coordinates specimen delivery with appropriate laboratories.
  • Visits patients in diverse pediatric and adult genetic and metabolism clinics: assists the geneticist in diagnosis, management, and evaluation of patients seen in the pediatric clinic and inpatient consultations.
  • Conducts appropriate follow-up including generation and distribution of consultant letters, documentation in patient record, and direct communication with collaborating healthcare providers.
  • Assists with implementation, coordination, maintenance and design of ongoing and new research protocols.
  • Completes required Illinois Department of Public Health quarterly reporting of patients seen in genetic clinic for IDPH genetic counseling grant.
  • Other duties as assigned.
